Germany is pushing to modernize its leading exporters, the big car companies. Through regulation and public shaming, it is pressuring the carmakers to turn from the still highly profitable combustion engine to the electric cars of the future. 

Of that there isn't much to see. German car makers are still lagging behind and are being protected ...

Anyways: The really interesting point is that it's absolutely unclear who might benefit politically from this. Merkel will leave office when this government term ends next year and it's completely open who might lead the three largest parties (Conservative CDU/CSU, Social Democrats, and Green) into the elections. (yeah, Greens have their double leadership, but given the strength they might consider nominating a candidate for Chancellor - then they have to pick one)
